Sprouts is a season-long program for children, providing them with an opportunity to play and learn in the garden together and culminating in a week-long summer camp and campout. The goal of this program is to
engage children in creative care and community development early, while they are already close to the soil and before they are taught prejudices which allow racial and socio-economic differences to interfere with lasting frienships. Rather free-form in nature, Sprouts, gives children an opportunity to explore and learn on their own first, and then supplements that self-guided experiential education with songs, crafts, gardening and snacks.
Sprouts, may be as much for adults as it is for children; children are natural teachers and they also bring adults together to learn from each other. Child-rearing is necessarily a communal activity, one of give and take, but unfortunately in our modern world there are few places for this exchange to occur in a village-style setting. In the words of one of our Sprouts parents, “I know how to build stuff , so that is what I can offer (he was working on the construction of our walk-in cooler), but I need everyone else to help me raise my girls.”
We depend on parent volunteers to help us run the Sprouts program each summer and summer camp. The program will start next May 2013. Please send us an email to inquire about how you can get involved.
