At Anathoth, we mourned the loss and gave deep thanks for the life of Geof Gledhill. Geof passed away in December. He was one of the founding visionaries of the garden, a long-time board member, and a very long-time friend of so many in the Anathoth community. Here is a reflection from Chas Edens:
“This past Saturday (Dec. 16), I lost a neighbor, a close friend and mentor. Geof Gledhill exemplified the values I first read about in the essays and stories of Wendell Berry: stewardship, generosity, peaceableness. He taught me practical things about farming and law and also more intangible things like how to walk a guest to the door even if you’re fast asleep on the couch. There was a time in my life when he was my landlord and my boss, and amazingly, still my friend. We would always end a passing conversation by saying, “See you around the campus.” I had hoped that my daughters would have more time to sit on his lap and run around the farm with him. I had hoped to squeeze a little more wisdom from our conversations. But it wasn’t so. Burying him on his beloved farm with close family and friends this past weekend was one of the most profound experiences of my life. I’ll remember him with the cows. In the blueberries. On the front porch under the maple tree where the bengal cats climb like jaguars. I will still see him around the campus.”
